The southern countries in Europe like Greece, Italy, Malta and Spain have something in common, they are the stepping stone to the rest of Europe; France, UK, Germany, Sweden, etc.
A whole boatload (pun intended) of people migrants or immigrants are using these countries hoping to make it further up to the financially healthy countries like Germany, but they are not wanted. Approximately two hundred thousand people applied for asylum in Germany last year.
They are coming in through the French port city of Calais where Le Tunnel becomes the Chunnel (English Channel or Eurotunnel). Officials at the Tunnel have said that they have prevented approximately 37,000 crossings since January. Last Year there were 39,000 attempts to cross the Channel illegally
The Aegean and Mediterranean seas have swallowed people as their boats have proven not worthy of the trip.
Kos is a Greek Island that is only 2 1/2miles from Turkey and has the shortest crossing by sea to Europe. The island is popular with Germans and Scandinavians for all-inclusive vacations. How do you think they will feel about going there now?
Locals in Greece are complaining about an abandoned house the Leros Coast Guard want to use as a temporary shelter. It’s too close to homes and a children’s day-care center. They have migrants sleeping in the jail, storage areas, and hallways of their offices. Others sleep on park benches. Or in the lobby of a hotel. The ones who have money share a room with 3 or 4 other people where they give them a deal for approximately 15 euros a night.
Fake passports and I.D. cards are all over Athens.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates at least 30,400 migrants have entered Greece as of May 12th. All of 2014 had 34,000. Italy at least 35,100 this year. There is a 300% rise in people coming from North Africa and Libya through Italy.
There is a Dublin Regulation that says the EU nations which receive the migrants first are responsible for them. Who ever created that document knew that there would be a huge problem. So the South EU nations and North are fighting this out.
So now Europe, like the US is politically correct and this problem has reached their politicians. This is their hot potato. Oh how pathetic and spineless politicians are, take a stand and face the music.
They are coming from Libya, Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan, Iraq, Kosovo and who knows how many more countries have people fleeing the poor or unsafe conditions. And who knows how many are terrorists?
The British are using “Operation Stack,” normally used for bad weather. Trucks are parked along the tunnel routes, totally screwing up the delivery of all sorts of goods, which of course will affect prices. Flowers are wilting as other perishables that have a limited life. Food shortages. Of course anything that someone is waiting for now have no choice but to find it other places or just wait.
They are using dogs to sniff out those sneaking into trucks, but they still missed 15 crammed into one. A UK hauler or haulier as they call it is furious with David Cameron, he is afraid he may go out of business.
This is the early stages of a very serious problem for Europe, and will be a lot worse if they don’t get a hold of it. The numbers now seem very high. But you have people who are comparing it to the entire population of Europe and saying it’s not so bad. But this is where they are wrong. This will cost Europe BIG time in tourism, BIG! Cost to Brits so far, $390 million a day.
Picture yourself in Italy going to the beach to get away from all the madness of your hectic life and seeing immigrants all over the place.
For blogging out loud)) with all of Europe’s problems financially and the unemployment problems this will be devastating for them. This is just a preview for all countries, including the United States and why an open border is a big problem. A nice idea when all is well, but the world has many problems and they want to share it with all of us.))
