The people in New England wanted their freedom from the brits and it began in 1775. On July 2, 1776, the Congress had a secret vote for independence from Great Britain. Two days later The Declaration of Independence was first published on July 4, 1776. People first heard the reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 8, 1776. Delegates signed the Declaration of Independence on August 2, 1776. In 1870, federal employees had off but didn’t get paid.
John Adams described to his wife Abigail on July 3, 1776 what Independence Day would be like. He said there would be “pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations” throughout the United States.
